Stone Of Invincibility Diamonds were formed at depths of 150 - 200 miles (320 Kms) below the Earth's surface up to 3.3 billion years ago at temperatures of between 900º and 1,300º C and under great pressure. Kimberlite also formed under similar conditions and was forced upwards through diamond bearing rocks erupting on the surface and forming the diamond 'pipe' Diamonds are brought close to the Earth's surface through deep volcanic eruptions by magma, which cools into igneous rocks known as kimberlites and lamproites. Diamond is a symbol of love and fidelity and was offered as a pledge of love or friendship. The Diamond is considered by many to be the “King of Gems”. The Argyle Diamond Mine produces 30 million carats of diamonds a year making it the world's biggest supplier of diamonds. The mine is situated in the East Kimberly region of Western Australia. The diamonds are mined from open cut and alluvial deposits which are operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Argyle produces the rare Pink Diamonds which are regarded as the finest in the world. The mine extracts about 80 million tonnes of raw material to recover 30 million carats (about 6 tonnes). |
